Finally A Laurel Scroll

OMG, I just got the replacement for my Laurel scroll (which was not right) and it is AMAZING! I will post a picture of it soon. Unfortunatly it got a bit damaged between England and here and I am trying to make it flat before I attempt repairs. Rick Williams (I don't remmber his SCA name but and trying to get it) did it as a gift and I could not be more pleased with it!
OK, I had to take a picture and share, I love it so much. Based on a Fresco (by Mantegna from The Camera degli Sposi).

Detail of the main illumination;

Creative Grandson

I am not supposed to call him my grandson, but he is my son's son so he IS my grandson. And he is a lot like his dad and me...apparently his mother bought him a Halloween costume but he decided to make his own. Here is what he came up with. :)

Inktober 10, Gryffon Again

I was commissioned at Pennsic to do a rampant Gryffon to be used on banners and such. It will be colored when finished but they wanted a line drawing first. This is the second version and I think way better than the first one I did. I am using it as an Inktober picture because, well it is a drawing in ink. "Rampant Gryffon", 9 x 12, Micron pen on Bristol. Picture 44.

Inktober 9

India ink is giving me some ideas and letting me play with larger black areas more quickly than markers. I may revisit this idea someday as I like the concept and while I am ok with this picture, I think I could do better with the idea. Inktober 9, "Black Stag", 8 x 11, India ink and white gel pen on matt board. Original and prints available. Picture 43.

Alien Inktober 8

Always loved Gigger's Alien and found a great reference to work from so I did this quick version as my 8th Inktober pic. "Xenomorph", about 9 1/2 x 6 1/2, India ink, wash and white gel pen on Canson board. Original and prints available. picture 42.

The last of the Undines this is a Double rose based on a page from the Mira calligraphiae monumenta. This is about 3 1/2 x 5, Acrylic on velum (skin not paper.) Picture 37.

Undines (part 1)

In the SCA, in the Kingdom of Atlantia, the Queen can give her personal token of gratitude to those who have served her during her reign. This award is called the Undine. I am doing a ton of these for our current Queen. These are the first 2 without words...I will be adding calligraphy soon.
"Rose bud and butterfly" inspired by the Mira Calligraphiae Monumneta, Folio 11, Viena, 1560's.
"Dafoodil" inspired by the Hours of the conception of the Virgin, Hours of Louis XII, Folio 370, French, 1500's. Picture 29 and 30.

Old Gods

Another of my "Gods of Atlantis" series I did back in the 80's. "Bringer of Storms" Acrylic and watercolor colored pencil on Canson board, 7 x 11 or so. I love the piece but it never sold. I guess the Gods of Atlantis were just to personal to me. (I said the same about the other 2 Gods of Atlantis I did.) Prints available.

False Patriots Day

OK, I have never heard it called "Patriots Day" untill now, but I will never use that term as Patriot has become a worthless dirty word just like the flag. After 9/11 a bunch of so called "patriots" started flying the flag to show just how American they were. They flew it dirty, they flew it tatered, they flew it at night in the dark, they flew it like gang colors and NOT with any respect! None of them seemed to understand the flag code that I have known since I was a child; NEVER let teh flag touchthe ground or get dirty! You Never fly a tattered flag! You always have a light on a flag if it is flying at night! These same people want to make burning the flag illegal compleatly ignoring the fact that burning is the proper, perscribed way to dispose of a flag that is; dirty, torn, faded! But these false patriots who will make a big fuss on 9/11 and fly the flag from the back of their pick up trucks with a confederate flag next to it (or just a sticker of one in the window), who will drag the flag through the dirty and fly it when it is falling apart. These people who are hapy that Trump is destroying EVERYTHING good about this country and who think America is only for WHITE Christians, THESE are the peopel who will make a big deal out of "Pariots Day" and who will claim to be doing it to remember those who died on 9/11 when really all they are doing is trying to stir up hate for theose who are diffrent from them and who have a diffrent religion! These peopel are wht both the word patriot and the flag are now meaningless at best and dirty words at worst!

Book of Love Pelican

Pelican scroll inspired by pages from King Rene’s Book of Love, specifically Folio 18v and Folio 21v, 15th century, France. Illumination by Master Tristan Alexander, calligraphy by Lady Failenn Chu Inghean Fhaelain .  I think it was 9 x 12, Acrylic, Egg Tempera and Gold leaf on Parchemnt (the skin not the paper). Pitcure 28
(Dame Bell Phoebe while traveling with her page and her Laurel Knight approaches a bridge where she sees a tree full of her accomplishments and then a Pelican Knight appears to join her company!)

Beautiful Tiny Satyr

I just received a small statue I purchased from the sculptor  Stephen Blanche who lives in England. I saw it when it was only just started and he has done so much tiny and amazing details including the quiver with several tiny individual arrows in it! He is 6 inches tall and just AMAZING!

Mini Me

Apparently my name is popular, several years ago there was a rash of people naming their kids Tristan Alexander (last name here). This year at Pennsic the mother of one of them brought her son in to meet me (again). She says that when he was new born they saw my shop at Pennsic and brought him in to get a picture with me. She promised to send me a copy of it along with the new one she took this year, he is 6 or 7 and a doll! I got lots of hugs and smiles. Here is the picture I took and I asked him not to smile so  got a serious face I am afraid. This is Tristan Alexander Cooper.

I Will Illuminate Anything

At Pennsic this year a gentle asked me if I would decorate his wooden shoes, so I illuminated them. Acrylic on wood. 27

New Coronets

I did these for the current King and Queen of Atlantia in the SCA. These are for when they step down and are Duke and Countess. These are leather and have elements of their Arms on them. I fear his is to large and hers to small, but I did them the sizes I was given as right for them. (I seem to not have a picture of her coronet, I will try to get one) 25 and 26

Backlog Scroll for a King

In the SCA my King, the King of Atlantia was owed a scroll for his Kingdom level Fighting award, the Sea Stag. I did this for him mostly because he was so excited by the scroll did for Hienrich for his Pelican and because he has been such a great King.
Sea Stag for Duke Cuan, based on/inspired by the Prayer Book of Claude de France, St. Hubert Adoring the Miraculous Stag (fol. 41, right), France, Tours 1517. Done by Master Tristan Alexander July A.S. LII. This is I think 8 1/2 x 11, on velum (skin not paper), in Acrylic, Egg Tempera and oak gall ink. Picture 24

Pelican Scroll Given and Done

Now that it is given I can post pictures of the latest scroll I did for the SCA. A long time friend and founding Baron of my home group was awarded his Pelican. For those who do not know what a Pelican is in the SCA, You know what a Knight is ,well a Pelican is a Knight for service instead of fighting. It is a Peerage, one of 4 Great Awards that are SCA wide and are the best you can get. Here is his scroll, I did the illumination (the art) and a friends Baroness Daniela did the Calligraphy, it is in German because that is Heinrich's persona. This is Acrylic,  Egg Tempera and Micron pen on Parchment (animal skin). Picture 21.
Pelican scroll based on illustration 107 from the Theuerdank, German, 1517 by Leonhard Beck: Before the city walls, surrounded by the royal household, Theuerdank recives the laurel wreath from Queen Ehrenreich assisted by Ehrenhold.  Illumination by Master Tristan Alexander, Calligraphy by Baroness Daniela Schwartzhaupt.
