Old Gods

Another of my "Gods of Atlantis" series I did back in the 80's. "Bringer of Storms" Acrylic and watercolor colored pencil on Canson board, 7 x 11 or so. I love the piece but it never sold. I guess the Gods of Atlantis were just to personal to me. (I said the same about the other 2 Gods of Atlantis I did.) Prints available.

False Patriots Day

OK, I have never heard it called "Patriots Day" untill now, but I will never use that term as Patriot has become a worthless dirty word just like the flag. After 9/11 a bunch of so called "patriots" started flying the flag to show just how American they were. They flew it dirty, they flew it tatered, they flew it at night in the dark, they flew it like gang colors and NOT with any respect! None of them seemed to understand the flag code that I have known since I was a child; ...you NEVER let teh flag touchthe ground or get dirty! You Never fly a tattered flag! You always have a light on a flag if it is flying at night! These same people want to make burning the flag illegal compleatly ignoring the fact that burning is the proper, perscribed way to dispose of a flag that is; dirty, torn, faded! But these false patriots who will make a big fuss on 9/11 and fly the flag from the back of their pick up trucks with a confederate flag next to it (or just a sticker of one in the window), who will drag the flag through the dirty and fly it when it is falling apart. These people who are hapy that Trump is destroying EVERYTHING good about this country and who think America is only for WHITE Christians, THESE are the peopel who will make a big deal out of "Pariots Day" and who will claim to be doing it to remember those who died on 9/11 when really all they are doing is trying to stir up hate for theose who are diffrent from them and who have a diffrent religion! These peopel are wht both the word patriot and the flag are now meaningless at best and dirty words at worst!

Book of Love Pelican

Pelican scroll inspired by pages from King Rene’s Book of Love, specifically Folio 18v and Folio 21v, 15th century, France. Illumination by Master Tristan Alexander, calligraphy by Lady Failenn Chu Inghean Fhaelain .  I think it was 9 x 12, Acrylic, Egg Tempera and Gold leaf on Parchemnt (the skin not the paper). Pitcure 28
(Dame Bell Phoebe while traveling with her page and her Laurel Knight approaches a bridge where she sees a tree full of her accomplishments and then a Pelican Knight appears to join her company!)

Beautiful Tiny Satyr

I just received a small statue I purchased from the sculptor  Stephen Blanche who lives in England. I saw it when it was only just started and he has done so much tiny and amazing details including the quiver with several tiny individual arrows in it! He is 6 inches tall and just AMAZING!

Mini Me

Apparently my name is popular, several years ago there was a rash of people naming their kids Tristan Alexander (last name here). This year at Pennsic the mother of one of them brought her son in to meet me (again). She says that when he was new born they saw my shop at Pennsic and brought him in to get a picture with me. She promised to send me a copy of it along with the new one she took this year, he is 6 or 7 and a doll! I got lots of hugs and smiles. Here is the picture I took and I asked him not to smile so  got a serious face I am afraid. This is Tristan Alexander Cooper.

I Will Illuminate Anything

At Pennsic this year a gentle asked me if I would decorate his wooden shoes, so I illuminated them. Acrylic on wood. 27

New Coronets

I did these for the current King and Queen of Atlantia in the SCA. These are for when they step down and are Duke and Countess. These are leather and have elements of their Arms on them. I fear his is to large and hers to small, but I did them the sizes I was given as right for them. (I seem to not have a picture of her coronet, I will try to get one) 25 and 26

Backlog Scroll for a King

In the SCA my King, the King of Atlantia was owed a scroll for his Kingdom level Fighting award, the Sea Stag. I did this for him mostly because he was so excited by the scroll did for Hienrich for his Pelican and because he has been such a great King.
Sea Stag for Duke Cuan, based on/inspired by the Prayer Book of Claude de France, St. Hubert Adoring the Miraculous Stag (fol. 41, right), France, Tours 1517. Done by Master Tristan Alexander July A.S. LII. This is I think 8 1/2 x 11, on velum (skin not paper), in Acrylic, Egg Tempera and oak gall ink. Picture 24

My First MoD

Master of Defense is the SCA's 4th Peerage, it is a Knighthood for Fencing. This is the first scroll fro an MoD I have ever done. I Like to do different and I can only hope the man who got this was pleased with it.
Master of Defense scroll done on a pair of white leather gloves with a medallion of the order. Accomplishment of Arms with the addition of the badge for the Order of the Stag's Heart (Outlands), the badge of the Popular Company of Sojourners (Drachenwald), the badge for the Order of the White Scarf (Northshield), the badge for the Award of Cygnus (Northshield) and the badge for the Award of the Black Flame (Northshield). Done by Master Tristan Alexander. Picture 23

Pelican Scroll Given and Done

Now that it is given I can post pictures of the latest scroll I did for the SCA. A long time friend and founding Baron of my home group was awarded his Pelican. For those who do not know what a Pelican is in the SCA, You know what a Knight is ,well a Pelican is a Knight for service instead of fighting. It is a Peerage, one of 4 Great Awards that are SCA wide and are the best you can get. Here is his scroll, I did the illumination (the art) and a friends Baroness Daniela did the Calligraphy, it is in German because that is Heinrich's persona. This is Acrylic,  Egg Tempera and Micron pen on Parchment (animal skin). Picture 21.
Pelican scroll based on illustration 107 from the Theuerdank, German, 1517 by Leonhard Beck: Before the city walls, surrounded by the royal household, Theuerdank recives the laurel wreath from Queen Ehrenreich assisted by Ehrenhold.  Illumination by Master Tristan Alexander, Calligraphy by Baroness Daniela Schwartzhaupt.

Mountain of Work

OK, maybe the last picture for the calendar, maybe I need one more. This one is not based on Japanese prints but on Japanese paintings in this case originally on silk. "Summer Mountains", 4 x 6 3/4, Acrylic on Canson board. Original and prints available. Picture 19.

Little Fishy

"Minnow", 5 x 11, Acrylic, watercolot colored pencil, ProWhite and Micron pen on Canson board. Original and prints available. Picture 18.

Next

Photo taken under overcast sky, could not get scans to match up (it is to large to scan all at once. "Lady with a Fan", 6 x 14, Acrylic, watercolor colored pencil, ProWhite, Egg Tempera and Micron pen on Canson board. Original and prints available. Picture 17.

Horseing Around

OK only part horse, Finally get another one done. I have tried a few times to do a Japanese Centaur and never have gotten it to a point I was happy with. This one I think I like. There is a lot of very subtle shades in this that the scan did not capture, but it is what it is as they say. "Samurai Centaur", 6 x 14, Acryic, Watercolor colored pencil, ProWhite and Micron pen on Canson board. Original and prints available. Picture 16.

More for Calendar

I like a lot about this but still not sure if it is right. "Yokai Princess", 5 x 11, Acrylic, Micron pen, watercolor colored pencil and ProWhite on Canson board. Original and prints available. Picture 15.

Art for Calendar

As I seem to not have enough new Japanese print style pictures for this years Pennsic calendar I am trying to do a few small ones to fill the void. Here is  the first of these; "Shy Crane", 4 x 9 Acrylic, Micron pen and ProWhite on Canson board. Original and prints available. Picture 14.

Bordermarch Coronet(s)

OK, I got a commission for a pair of coronets for co-baroness and I love their Baronial arms and this design for the cornet. Here is the first one finished and the second is in the works (will be exactly the same). "Boardermarch Coronet", 22 inches, Acrylic with artificial pearls on leather. 13.

Attack of the Coronets

After a fairly long time since I had a commission for a coronet (the one I finished not that long ago was actually commissioned last year) I now have 4, a set for two ladies who serve as Baroness and Baroness (not a same sex couple), and two individual personal coronets. I am thrilled cause I can use the money and I enjoy making these. Will post them as I finish them.

Sforza Laurel

OK, by now the deed should be done so I hope it is safe to post this now. Many years ago while I was Baron, I attended a Kingdom Arts and Science event (this is all SCA www.sca.org related) and was sought out by a man I knew only slightly. He took me over to a table with a beautiful small wooden writing desk based on one belonging to Henry the VIII on it. The grain was matched, the wood was amazing and I complimented him on his wonderful work. He then told me it was mine!! I has been one of my prized possessions since then. The wife of this man contacted me a couple weeks ago and told me he was receiving his Laurel (the highest level award you can receive in the SCA for the Arts. Basically a Knighthood for the Arts). She requested that I do the scroll for him for this award and I was happy (if a bit rushed) to do it. So here it is finished, with my terrible calligraphy included. "Sforza Laurel", 9 x 12, Egg Tempera, Acrylic, ProWhite and Pigma pen on Parchment (the skin not the paper). It is based on pages the Sforza Hours, c.1490, Milan. The borders are my own variation on several from the book and the top and bottom Angel and Melusine are directly from different pages (samples will appear below my scroll). Bad calligraphy by me is in Oak Gall ink.  I hope he is happy with it and his laurel is well deserved for his amazing woodworking! Picture 12.

Period Porn Sort Of

I just found this Medieval image of the Fool Card from the Tarot showing 3 boys molesting the fool. The dark spot in the crotch area seems a later attempt to obscure the penis, but if you look closely you can see that it is there and erect. Just find it fascinating to see such an image from SCA period. You could never do such a picture now without moral outcry!

New Tiny SCA Art

I won't go into the whole reason, but I was kind of stuck in a Panera for several hours today and I knew I would be so I had stuff to work on. I had a scroll I need to finish an I worked on it for a while then had to do something else, and so this happened (I had sketched it previously but erased it all and did what you see). This is on real velum and has real gold leaf (tiny bits that don't show well in the scan). "Mary of Burgundy Tiny Bird Scroll", 3 1/4 x 5, Micron pen, Egg Tempera, a tiny bit of Acrylic and gold leaf on velum. Picture 11.

The second picture is a photo of the scroll showing the gold leaf better.

Brother, Friend, Artist, Gone

I just got the news that a close and dear friend who was more like a brother than just a friend, he was also an amazing artist and we shared a brain...I am stunned at his loss.

If I did not believe in reincarnation and know that he did to, I would be a mess right now. I know we will meet again.

Theadeaus Shaffer who I have known for over 30 years ,co-owner and proprietor of The Magic Mirror  (my shop at Pennsic) died this morning.  I am in shock.

He had a long list of serious health issues and is just another victim of our failed healthcare system!

Yet More Free Art

Instead of working on stuff that might sell and make me money I am doing yet another Peerage scroll for the SCA. I was asked to do this and since the person who it is for gifted me with something very spiffy once, I felt I should do it. The Sforza Hours is one of my all time fav books to work from so that is what this is inspired by. This is on real parchment (animal skin) and is 9 x 12.

Another Tiny Pic

Well for some reason the color washed out and I can not seem to get it to scan right, but anyway here is another small picture. "Tiny Lotus Dragon", 3 x 8 Acrylic, Micron pen, watercolor colored pencil and ProWhite on Canson board. Original and prints available. Picture 10.

SCA Scroll Update

Well the illumination part is finished, someone else will be doing the calligraphy so I will show the detail of the main Illuminations here and will show the completed scroll after it has been given. Again if you think you know who this is for KEEP it to yourself as it needs to stay a surprise!

I am a Failure

I am such a failure, my son doesn't trust me, I can't do anything right, no one wants my art and I am useless as a person!

SCA Scroll

This is a somewhat secret project, so if by some strange chance someone who knows who this might be for sees it here, please do NOT say anything to anyone about who you think it might be for! Awards are mostly done as a surprise and to have the person know they are getting it ruins that. But I wanted to post this WIP of what I am doing along with several other projects I am trying to do at the same time. This is on real parchment (animal skin) and is 11 x 17 overall, this detail is 7 x 7 roughly. The center area looks fuzzy because of the flash.

Experiment

I need to do a scroll for the SCA, normally that would be no big deal. I love working on velum (animal skin) and have some that is smooth and wonderful to work on. But when I went to get some for this scroll I could not find it. I did however find 2 nice size pieces of parchment (a less fine animal skin than velum). Having not really worked on parchment before I was unsure of how to prepare it if it was not already prepared fro use. So I took a small scrap and did this. I tried Calligraphy and painting on it (should have done real gilding but used paint instead). I based this on some medieval illumination with my own twists. "Atlantis", about 3 x 4, Acrylic, Micron pen, metallic paint and ink on parchment. Original SOLD. Prints available. Picture 9.

Meanwhile....

I am continuing the commission I started last year and still have not finished. I do really hope by the end of the week to be done or close to done.

Steampunk Bug

Not sure how I am going to matt this (doing the right size oval will be a huge pain), but I have a small unique frame that I id this specifically for. I love Praying Mantis and this idea came to me after seeing some very strange versions of that bug.  "Mechanimantis", 4 1/2 x 6 3/4, Acrylic, watercolor colored pencil, Micron pen and ProWhite on Canson board. Original and prints available. Picture 8.

More Non Planned Art

I still have tons I HAVE to do, but this is what I did instead. There is a lot of subtle things that the scan does not pick up well (like the delicate white pattern in the green kimono). The idea came to me to do a kitsune who transforms from her human form to her fox form because of the music she is playing. "By Music Transformed", 6 1/2 x 14 1/2, Acrylic, watercolor colored pencil, ProWhite, Micorn pen and white gel pen on Canson board. Original SOLD. Prints available. Picture 7.

New Coronet

This is a spiffy coronet  I did for the person I did the last one for, since I took so long on the first one I made this one and am selling it to her at a lower price as a thank you for her patience. I tried several new techniques on this and it is far from perfect but I think it is very spiffy! "Gold Star Coronet", 22 inches, Acrylic and artificial jewels and pearls on leather. Number 6.

More Not Right Art

I have two very small frames that I wanted to do Japanese print style art for and as it would not take long to do pictures for this small, I did this. "Red Flower with Faerie", 3 1/2 x 8 1/2, Micron pen, Acrylic, watercolor colored pencil and ProWhite on Canson board. Original and prints for sale. Picture 5.

New Art I Should Not Be Doing

I have commissions I need to finish and start but I bpught some new frames and they inspired me, so here is a new, small, pointless, so so picture. Bad title "Silver Sky Fish", roughly 8 x 6 oval, Acrylic and ProWhite on Canson board. Original and prints available. Picture 4.

Finaly Done

This should have been done last year but due to emotional and physically issues it took forever and is NOW finally finished. This is a commission, the gold and red star represents a comet which is on the Arms of the person who commissioned this. The blue is much darker and richer in real life.  "Star/Comet Coronet", 22 inches around, about 2 inches tall, Acrylic on leather with artificial half pearls. Number 3.

Favorite Old Shirt

Way back in 1998 I was asked to do the T-shirt and con book design for Ecuminicon. The theme that year was fire as represented by the Magician Tarot card. I did what I thought was a cool design, the suites and eternity being juggled over a forge. But what they did with the shirt is my favorite T-shirt design of any I have ever done for any con. They went out of their way to do overlays that allowed them to print white and then black over a red/orange/yellow mottled shirt. The end result is stunning and I could not have been happier with what they did. I wore mine until it wore out, this is my husband's which he has never worn.

Demon Icon

It is not turning out how I wanted and it may never be finished, but I wanted to do an Icon of Arioch, patron Demon of Elric. Someday I may manage to do one that looks how I want, but till then, here the work in progress of what I tried to do. "Arioch Icon WIP", detail (top half), the full thing is 8 1/2 x 16 1/2, Acrylic, metallic, Prisma color on black board.

New Art

OK, it is nothing I am supposed to be doing and nothing I started recently, but I came across the pencil drawing I had done as the preliminary for a Christmas card I had planed a few years ago (I did a different version in the end) and decided I liked the base sketch enough to finish the picture. So I inked and painted it and here it is. "Reindeer in Snow", 8 x 10, Micron pen, Acrylic and ProWhite on Illustration board. Original and prints available. Picture 2.

Old Dragonrider Picture

Well he is not old but the drawing is. The original was done in marker on Bristol most likely. This is a colored print, it is 3 2/3 x 9 1/4Acrylic wash over print on cardstock. "T'ran and Blink", T'ran was my Fort Weyr character in the Dragonriders of Pern fan club. He rode a green named Ananth and his bronze firelizard (pictured) is Blink. Prints available.

More Realy Old Art

I did this back in college, for one of our D&D games. The original is not in great shape but I scanned and cropped and hope it is at least presentable. I still love the design.  "Demon Dagger", ii x 11 (cropped from 11 x 17). Colored pencil on paper.

Old Art

Well since I have nothing new to post and just came across this old pencil sketch on colored paper I thought I would share it. This is from back when I was really into doing pencil shading. "Golden Boy", 9 x 8 1/2 on gold charcoal paper.

Me and Joe, Old Picture

This is me and Joe when he was maybe 10, at Pennsic War. Wish I had a picture of us both in the bat robes (the orange kimono with black bats that I am wearing here. He had one too).

Poor Start

I have done ONE picture so far this year.
By this time last year I had done 15 pictures! This makes me sick. Of course since I can seem to sell my art anymore anyway, I guess there is no reason to make more!

Finished Knighting Shield Scroll

OK, it is done except for the clear coating. So my calligraphy as usual is crap, but oh well. This is 24 x 38 curved wood shield painted with Acrylic. Picture 1 of 2017.
Addition partly for my friend Pyracantha. The picture below my painting is the painting it was based on by Albrecht Durur.

Sheild Scroll Update

Well the "calligraphy" is giving me fits, but the picture part is finished. Hope to have it all done by Wednesday.

Shield Scroll Update

Well, I had to redo part of this already. While I did my homework and painted the arms correctly, they are NOT how the person who has them wants them (and they are now working to get them officially switched). So I lost about a days worth of work redoing it. Anyway, here is the shield scroll as it currently stands, lots more to do. This is 25 x 36, curved wood, acrylic paint.
