Oh My God, It's Full of....Grass?

Paraphrasing 2001 A Space Odyssey, this is how I feel. I have been painting what is just the first step in a multiple step process for the majority of the background of "Never Sleep in a Fairy Ring II; Gathering the Elixir of Priapis". If I had remembered how much of a pain it was to do the grass this way in the first one, I would have charged the person who commissioned this ALOT more money! I am seeing grass leaves in my sleep now and I am only about 2/3rds done with this first step! ARRGGGHHH!

This is a slightly blurry detail of what I am doing. This is about a 3 inch square of a 16 x 20 inch picture.

  1. just a bunch of green exploding everywhere! but you know you like this stuff. look what you did to the sign at the store last year. Oh speaking of which i have a nice big black frame (all plastic) from a Fashion Bug that was going out of business. i figured it would make a great sign for the shop. a nice movable aimable waterproof sign that can easily be put away at night.

    Some technical questions here.

Do you paint the grass entirely first and then go back and paint in whatever might be covering it?

And then, do you go back and touch up the grass around whatever's covering it to show deformation of the blades themselves?

How do you "tie" the figure into the background?

Do you add some kind of shadow around the bottom of the figure along the grass, and, if so, how?

I'm just trying to understand all of the aspects that go into your paintings.

  3. The figures are done or laid in and then the basic color for the background is done, then each leaf is outlined. After that I do the shading and highlights on each leaf. Shadows are added of course for each figure and object.
