Imagination Etc.

I found this great quote (and a couple others) on another guys Weble, "I like nonsense it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living. Its a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what i do. And that enables you to laugh at life's realities." Dr Seuss

Here is something from my imagination, one of the "Gods of Atlantis" series I did back in the 80's. "He Who Strides the Seas" Acrylic and watercolor colored pencil on Canson board, 7 x 11 or so. I love the piece but it never sold. I guess the Gods of Atlantis were just to personal to me.

  1. All I can think of is Atlantean temple worshippers being given the astonishing sight of an enormous divine dongle wafting past.

  2. I love it too, though I must confess that I did not notice the wee city at first. I thought, "Oh, Nolofinwe playing in the water at Alqualonde!" Elves, always Elves, on the brain. Incidentally, my Tolkien group is getting ready to finish "Akallabeth in August" (it ran into September because it was so popular), which was held in honor of Tolkien's "Atlantis story," the Akallabeth. I kept meaning to mention that, knowing that you are rather partial to Atlantis lore, but I kept forgetting.

Anyway. The light through the clouds is lovely (there I go on the backgrounds again!), and what a wonderful quote! The sad thing is the number of people who think that fantasy is not only unnecessary but wrong or bad. A lot of Bobby's students are actually discouraged by their clinicians from writing or drawing. (I had a headsplode moment when I heard that!) They need to "live in the real world," they are told and shouldn't "escape" so much through fantasy. Half of these kids don't even have homes, and they're decried for liking anime or writing fantasy stories. The mind boggles.

  3. I don't think I was aware that Tolkien had written any "Atlantis" stories.

  4. OH, I forgot, the idea that the kids Bobby is dealing with are not supposed to draw or write fantasy is not just stupid, it's evil! Most credible phycologists recognise the value and need for "escape into fatasy" in the form of creative writing or art as a GOOD thing and needed for a healthy mind etc. I can't belive some ogff the idiots who are allowed to "help" kids or others with mental/emotional problems.

  5. The Akallabeth (Tolkien's Atlantis story) is one of the books in The Silmarillion. See, all the more reason to read The Silmarillion. Dawn Felagund = shameless agitator ;)

Anyway. When I was at Six Flags a few weeks back with Bobby and his students, one of his students was telling me how he was discouraged from liking cartoons, anime, and so on. I told him that I liked that sort of stuff too, and that "grown-ups" who told him that it was wrong to like were just jealous because they had no fun in their lives. >:^)
