Black on Black

Here is my latest picture. This is done on a great black paper I found and is done in acrylics and Prisma color. Early last year or maybe even late 2007, I tried to do an Anubis picture on this same piece of paper and it just didn't come out right but I didn't trow it away. I kept it near my drawing table and kept looking at it and thinking I could "fix" it and make it work. Well, I didn't fix it, I used the back (something I almost NEVER do) and did this picture. The scan gives stronger contrast on his body than you really see on the original. As always, feedback is welcome and appreciated.

  1. I love it. I really do. But I hate you :( I can't even draw a stick figure without messing it up, and I always have these wonderful things in my head I want to put down on some medium :(.

  2. Ryan, glad you like it. You say you hate me because you "can't draw even a stick figure" and you "have these wonderful things in your head..." well imagine how frustrating it is to be able to do art like I can and have those "wonderful things in my head" and NOT be able to get them out.
In your case, and most non artists cases, you hate that you have an idea and can't "articulate" it. For me and many artists I know, we have hundreds of ideas every day sometimes, and many NEVER get out of our heads or never come out the way we want. I myself have tried many times to put things down on papper that just do not come out. And it is worse when you have the talent and the skill and STILL can't get what you want to come out!
Being an artists is a blessing and a curse, it is great to be able to draw, paint etc. and to create some of the wonderful things I can but on the other hand there is the frustration I just mentioned and the fact that even if you can't sell a thing, or don't really want to, you MUST draw/paint! It is not something I do because I want to, it is something I do because I MUST! It is like breathing, if I don't do it I will die. As an artist, if I do not draw/paint/create I will die! This is not optional!

  3. Egyptian anthropomorphism! Very nice! But what is that black paper you are using? I have some black coated board which has a very flat surface almost like velvet, but it is actually rough and hard to use. Colors really stand out on it though.

  4. i second the question from Pyracantha
what kind of black paper is that. i got some black bristol and it did not take some of the mediums i had well at all where as i used to work on some sort of black paper that used to take pencils and gel pens and such like a charm. the colours turned out so vibrant it was amazing. so i guess i am using the wrong stuff now..

also lovely Anubis there. he almost has the body posture of a big dog hearing a weird noise. you should do something with another god (may i suggest Nephertem. the lion god of beauty lotuses sunrises creation art and perfume) doing something odd in a companion panel

  5. Pyra and Theddy, the black paper is Strathmore, Artagain black. It is wonderful to work on, smooth but not slick, nice weight (60 lb) and you can get it at Michael's. It comes in big sheets or in pads. I love the stuff.
As for the picture, I was happy with it and the pose and details came out better than I might have expected. The scan for once is even better than the original (better contrast).
